![]() ![]() "NASA ruled the launch," Ebeling told United Press International in 2016. The NASA ground team of the Challenger launch. NASA reportedly brushed off his fears, and while Thiokol's management team initially backed their engineers, they later reversed course and told NASA to proceed with the launch. In fact, Allan McDonald, former director of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Project for Morton-Thiokol, the contractor behind the design of the O-rings, had previously raised concerns that the below-freezing temperatures could negatively impact the integrity of the rockets' O-rings.Įngineer Bob Ebeling also voiced his concerns about the O-rings, and prior to the failed launch, he and a group of engineers held a meeting with NASA managers from Kennedy Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center where they told NASA to postpone the flight. Sadly, it was known that O-rings could fail. Could the Challenger disaster have been prevented? (Many outlets at the time incorrectly reported that the craft had exploded.) The cabin that the crew was inside remained intact throughout the craft's disintegration, but two minutes and forty-five seconds after breakup, the cabin hit the ocean surface at about 207 mph, which was "far in excess of the structural limits of the crew compartment or crew survivability levels," as this archived version of the report on the deaths of the crew explains. Structural failure occurred when pressurized burning gas from the solid rocket motor reached the external fuel tank, which then disintegrated, leading to Challenger being ripped apart. The morning of the 1986 space flight was much colder than previous Challenger launches, and the primary O-ring became cold and hard and couldn't seal properly. That seal helps to prevent liquids or gases from escaping. The Challenger accident was caused by a design flaw in the spacecraft's O-rings, which are mechanical gaskets that are designed to be seated in a groove and then compressed in between two surfaces, creating a seal at the interface. What caused the Space Shuttle Challenger accident in 1986? Here's what you need to know about the 1986 Challenger disaster. The series will include rare archival footage and interviews with former NASA officials, engineers, and the crew's surviving family members.Īnd while the disaster has remained ingrained in the public's mind for the 34 years since it occurred, many still don't know what exactly caused the incident. Now, Netflix is examining the events leading up to and after the disaster in a new four-part docuseries, Challenger: The Final Flight. The incident forever changed the way NASA operated its space shuttle program. The 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster was a shocking tragedy, and it was made all the more devastating due to the fact that the spacecraft's disintegration was broadcast on live TV. Netflix will explore the Challenger disaster in a newly released docuseries.Unfortunately, a structural failure led to the spacecraft's disintegration just 73 seconds after its launch at the Kennedy Space Center, killing all seven crew members on board. The purpose of the JanuChallenger flight, STS-51-L, was to launch the first Teacher in Space Project while also observing Halley's Comet for six days.
![]() Use a glass pen to write the date on your wine bottle, so you’ll know exactly how much time you have left to enjoy it.įortified wines will last for one month after they are opened. It’s important to remember when your wine bottle was opened.Large boxes of wine tend to hold four or five bottles but will last up to a month because of how they are sealed and dispensed. Boxed wines won’t work with any wine preserver but may not necessarily need to be preserved. However, advanced wine preservation systems require a cork. A vacuum pump will preserve wine in screw-top bottles as well.Lighter whites and rosés, however, will last a couple days longer than full-bodied whites. Red wines with more tannins and acidity, like Cabernets and Malbecs, will last a bit longer than lighter reds, such as Pinot Noir. And make sure the bottle is stored upright to minimize the surface area that is exposed to any light or traces of oxygen. ![]() Keep wine in a cool, dark place like the fridge. Although a wine preserver will preserve your wine for several days, there are a few simple ways to extend your wine’s life even longer.Look for wine preservers that include four to eight stoppers. There is no point in getting a vacuum pump if you don’t have enough stoppers to go around. However, two stoppers may not be enough, especially if you like pairing specific wines to specific meals. Most basic wine preservers come with one or two stoppers, which is ideal if you have friends over and open one white and one red. So, if you have a penchant for Moscato, then you’ll have more time without the need of a wine preserver than someone who exclusively drinks Cabernet, for example. Full-bodied whites and most reds will last three to five days. Light-bodied and sweet whites, such as Riesling or Pinot Grigio, have a shelf life of about five or six days once opened. These are expensive products, however, and the market is dominated by one company that has mastered this system.īefore buying a wine preserver, it’s important to note that not all wine oxidizes and expires at the same rate. They’re ideal for wine connoisseurs and especially great if you just want a sip or taste of a quality wine. These devices penetrate the cork with a small needle and pour out your wine without ever letting air in. Advanced wine preservation systems: At a much higher price point, you can buy a wine preservation system that uses advanced technology that allows you to enjoy the wine without ever uncorking it.Wine sprays also require more attention and work. Some customers may be put off by the idea of spraying an aerosol gas into their wine, however. After you pour your wine, you spray the gas inside the bottle and recork it as quickly as possible. Sprays replace the oxygen in an open bottle with inert gases. Wine sprays: These are less common, in part because they seem counterintuitive and antithetical to drinking wine. This should preserve your wine for at least a week. You may have to pump a few times to remove all the oxygen. When you’re done drinking, place the stopper in the bottle and use the pump to remove the oxygen and seal the stopper. They are made up of two parts: the stopper and the pump. Vacuum pumps: The most common and most affordable type of wine preserver, vacuum pumps work well for most wine drinkers. There are three common wine preservation techniques, which all aim to keep oxygen out of the wine bottle. Key considerations Types of wine preservers Oxidized red wine is great for cooking or using in salad dressings. Sour wine doesn’t have to be a complete waste. For our five favorite products on the market, see the matrix above. Our buying guide has everything you need to consider when shopping for wine preservers. Simple wine preservers can increase the longevity of wine from a few days to a week, while more advanced technologies are geared toward preserving finer wines for even longer. ![]() With a wine preserver, you can open a bottle, enjoy as much or as little as you desire, and then keep what’s left fresh. Wine preservers are a great way to preserve your bottles. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on wine to only enjoy some of it. Once the wine bottle is unsealed, oxygen gets in and slowly starts to change the flavor of the wine. That window is especially small with wine, which can improve mightily when it’s allowed to breathe, only to turn acidic and undrinkable if it’s not consumed within a few days. When it comes to some drinks, breaking the seal or popping the top means the clock starts counting down toward expiration. Spiral-horned antelope have small, low-crowned teeth. The cows and calves are redder in color, which gives them better camouflage in their woodland habitat. Lesser kudu also have white chevrons between their eyes and white patches on their neck. These help make them hard to find in the dappled sunlight coming through trees. Kudu have a sleek, brownish gray coat with vertical white stripes on the body. Lesser kudu are great jumpers and can leap over obstacles up to 8 feet (2.5 meters) high. But if you were to straighten out the spirals, the horns would be up to 35 inches (89.5 centimeters) long. From tip to tip, the horns can grow up to 28 inches (71 centimeters) long. Greater or Cape kudu bulls have the longest horns. As its name suggests, the giant eland is the world's largest antelope. ![]() The spirals help the bulls lock horns with each other when engaged in fights over cows. In eland, the bulls' horns are always heavier and longer than the cows' and often have more spirals. Spiral-horned antelope bulls tend to be heavier and darker than the cows. The 13th Earl of Derby had a large, private zoo on the grounds of his home in England during the early 19th century. ![]() The giant eland is also known as the Lord Derby's eland. The horn material grows faster and thinner at certain times, and then thicker and slower at other times. So, how do the horns grow in a spiral? The twisting is a result of a growth pulse. In elands, the cows (females) have them, too. The bulls (males) have these impressive hood ornaments. Theodore Roosevelt once described greater kudu as "the handsomest of game animals." Greater kudu bulls are much larger than the cows, outweighing them by up to 220 pounds (100 kilograms).īuilt-in corkscrews: If an ungulate is called a spiral-horned antelope, you'd better believe it’s going to have a set of spiraling horns on its head!
